After Bashing Yoko Ono For Years, Howard Stern Was Taken Aback By This Gesture

Summary

  • Howard Stern was invited by Yoko Ono to attend her play "New York Rock" after mocking her for years.
  • Despite his skepticism, Stern received a letter directly from Ono's publicist inviting him to the play.
  • The tension between Ono and The Beatles was explored, with Paul McCartney eventually making amends with her.

The Beatles were a rock band that revolutionized popular music. Their influence is still felt to this day, making them one of the biggest bands in music history.

Among the band's many fans is radio host Howard Stern. Stern has often spoken about his admiration for the band over the years.

However, his deep love for the band extended to a dislike of Yoko Ono. Known as John Lennon's former partner, Ono hasn't always had the greatest reputation among fans of The Beatles. Despite Stern openly making fun of her, Ono invited Stern to attend her play, much to his shock.

Yoko Ono Invited Howard To Her Play In New York After He Spoke Badly About Her For Years

In 1994, Howard Stern read a letter he received inviting him to see Yoko Ono's play New York Rock live on his radio show.

As he read the letter, the shock jock stated he didn't believe Ono herself sent the letter. He believed it was sent via a publicist.

The letter read, "Concerning our conversation, Yoko Ono and the WPA want Howard to come see New York Rock."

According to Stern's producer, Gary Dell'Abate, he spoke with Ono's publicist before he faxed the invite. Dell'Abate asked the publicist if he was sure Ono herself wanted Stern to attend the play. The publicist insisted the invite came directly from Ono.

Stern had good reason to be suspicious. He had spent many years goofing on Ono during his radio show. In addition to making fun of her music and singing, Stern also felt she was bad for John Lennon.

Stern, a longtime Beatles fan, has long expressed the belief that Ono's only claim to fame was her relationship with Lennon. He often expressed outrage and disgust that she would discuss The Beatles during interviews, claiming she had nothing to do with the band.

Someone who had beef with Ono in regard to her alleged role in breaking up The Beatles was Paul McCartney. McCartney was in a feud with Ono and Lennon for a long time over the band's breakup.

However, he revealed to Stern why he ended up mending fences with Ono during a 2018 interview.

"Even though we thought she was intrusive because she used to sit in on the recording sessions and we’d never had anything like that. But looking back on it, you think, ‘The guy was totally in love with her. And you’ve just got to respect that.’ So we did. And I do," McCartney told Stern.

It's unclear if Stern actually attended the play, but he did make Ono an offer of his own.

"You tell Yoko to come on my show and I'll go to her show," Stern said.

During an episode of The Howard Stern Show, the radio host goofed on Paris Hilton's song "Drunk Text." While he mocked Hilton for having "no talent" and living a "vapid" lifestyle, Stern shared a story about an encounter he had with the socialite.

According to Stern, while visiting Las Vegas, he and his wife Beth were attending a show. It was then that Hilton arrived with an entourage. However, it was clear that she wasn't happy to see the radio host.

"When I was in Vegas, I was at some show with my wife," Stern began, "and Paris Hilton came in with 20 people. She took a look at where she was going to be sitting, which was next to me, and she refused."

This Celebrity Pulled A Prank On Howard After The Radio Host Made Fun Of Him

By the late 1980s, Richard Simmons had become a regular guest on The Howard Stern Show. Simmons would always come to Stern's show and deliver his over-the-top, flamboyant personality while Stern poked fun at him for it.

In 1989, however, Simmons pulled a stunt not even Stern saw coming.

One day, Stern was doing his radio show as usual when a tough-looking man dressed in a biker outfit stormed into the studio. The man seemed to be angry at Stern's in-studio comedian and writer, Jackie Martling, before directing his attention to Stern himself.

"I think you're a great guy," Stern said to the man. "What's the matter? I'm sorry."

Stern was clearly shaken up and not sure who the man was, how he got into the studio, or what was about to happen. Then, the man revealed his true identity.

"It's Richard!" Simmons proclaimed.

Simmons would later discuss the memorable moment on Twitter, writing, "I was asked to do a radio show with a shock jock named Howard Stern… I did the show and he was a bit hard on me. But I felt I held my own. When I went outside people would tell me that they just heard me on Howard’s show and I should go back as often as I can."

The shock jock himself was caught off guard when this surprise guest dressed in a convincing disguise.

"Before Howard had cameras in his studio, I would go in disguise. One day I dressed as a biker," Simmons wrote. "Brown straight hair a mustache jeans a black shirt and a leather vest. I also filled my arms with peel and stick tattoos. I pushed my way into the studio and scared them all. I told them I was angry at Howard."

He concluded, "Let’s just say the shock jock got shocked."
