Birth and Early Education

Nahas Angula was born on August 22, 1943, in Onyaanya, Namibia. He began his education at Onyaanya Primary School in 1959 and attended Oniip Primary Boys School until 1962.

Higher Education and Activism

Angula continued his education at Ongwediva College in 1962. His academic excellence earned him a place at Nkhumbi International College in Zambia, and he later pursued a degree at the University of Zambia in the 1970s. He also spent time in the United States, studying at Columbia University in New York, where he obtained a Master's degree. In 1967, Angula became an activist with the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) and spent the period 1967-1989 in exile in Zambia.

Career in Education and Politics

Prior to 1989, Angula worked for Radio Zambia from 1973 to 1976 and for the United Nations from 1976 to 1980. He served as Secretary for Education on the SWAPO Politburo. Upon returning from exile in 1989, he became the Head of Voter Registration for SWAPO's Electoral Department in Windhoek. Angula was a member of the Constituent Assembly from November 1989 to March 1990.

In 1990, Angula was elected to the National Assembly of independent Namibia and served as Minister of Education, Sport, and Culture from 1990-1995. He then became Minister of Higher Education from 1995 to 2005.

Premiership

In April 2004, at the SWAPO Central Committee congress in Windhoek, Angula was one of the three candidates nominated for president. He garnered the third-highest number of votes in the party's primary elections and subsequently endorsed Hifikepunye Pohamba, who became president. President Pohamba appointed Angula as Prime Minister on March 21, 2005.

Foreign Policy and Controversies

Angula has been an active supporter of developing relations with China, particularly in the areas of construction, military cooperation, and education. In 2006, he played a role in the relocation of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's family to Namibia, influencing the passing of a law that restricted the entry of journalists without government clearance. Angula has also taken measures to protect Jolie and Pitt's privacy, particularly when Jolie gave birth to their twins.
